While he may not remember his life before Hitotose City, he does remember that he was always a wallflower. Getting up in front of a crowd was never something he could do without his nerves freezing his entire body, tears brimming, and words catching in his throat. He keeps to the side, never trying to draw attention to himself. He feels safer if he is just "part of the crowd" as he doesn't have to worry about anyone calling out to him or dealing with the wrong people. Introverted by nature, he prefers to be by himself, drawing energy from within rather than those around him. The few times he is perfectly content with being around others involve his closest of friends, but he still feels shut out from the rest of the world, freezing up if someone he doesn't know, even if it is a friend of his friend, tries to talk to him.

Because of this side of him, it can take a little while for him to warm up to anyone. Yet, a little kindness goes a long way for Marcel. He can easily become putty in your hand if you do even the slightest kind act towards him, be it keeping him from absentmindedly walking into a busy street or just by helping him pick up some books he has dropped. You could say that he is gullible, but this gullibility only shows itself once there is a spark of trust that he has for a person. Otherwise, he remains guarded, as if everyone is out to get him.
